As a young boy I would go to a lake not far from my home. One summer day I was fishing and moved one of the big rocks on the rocky side of the lake. To my amazement there was a tool called the Fisherman’s Friend. It was a combination pliers, knife and fish scaler. It was even in a leather holder. That fisherman’s friend was my “go to” fishing tool. As a kid it was my treasure.
Jesus refers to a treasure buried in a field. A man could have gone by the field to dig worms to go fishing and he comes upon a treasure. He sells all that he has to buy that field and to get the treasure. Jesus is speaking in this chapter of the Kingdom of God being an absolute treasure. My sense is we see our lives as our treasure, and we “add on” Jesus merely to make our lives better. Jesus wants us to see the Kingdom as our life. Without the kingdom we are dead. Having the kingdom as an “Add on” is also death. Jesus and His kingdom is an all or nothing proposition. Having it fully is a win. Not having it or having it as part of your own self-built kingdom is a loose.
Giving up all else to have an eternal treasure is not a loss, but a huge win. Jesus is that treasure. Don’t just add Him onto your life, but see Him as your life. Set all lesser treasures aside and grasp the one unfading treasure, Jesus.
