Years ago I served alongside an amazing man from South Africa named, Steve Murphy. He was ten years my senior and his faith was impressive. He spoke so highly of God and so highly of his desires from God. Regularly he would talk of God blessing our families with faith filled followers of Jesus for five generations. Not just our kids, not just our grandkids, not just our great grand kids, not just our great great grand kids, but all the way to our great, great, great grand children being followers of Jesus Christ. Most likely they would not even know of the great faithfulness of Steve, but he was the man asking God for such a marvelous legacy.

It is passages like Genesis 17:7 that prompt us to consider the eternality of God and His faithfulness that continues through multiple generations. In the coming chapters of Genesis we will see the covenant to Abraham extending to a group of descendants that are preserved by going into Egypt. Then in Exodus we see that same family emerging from Egypt 470 years later as a nation of over a million and a half people.

God is still producing legacies like that. He is forming a new people for himself called “The Church.” He is preserving generations of families like the Murphys. Get a vision beyond the needs of today. Take a moment today and pray for five generations of your family to produce followers of Jesus that will join you around the throne of God at the resurrection.
