if you struggle to advocate for yourself, read this

Dear ,

I enjoyed a great deal of privilege most people don't have in their career.

This is 21 year old me, teaching my first ever workshop. I was filled with nerves and impostor syndrome but I did it anyway.

This marked a pivotal moment in my career, it was what gave me the confidence to continue speaking and sharing my work, knowing that people gained value from it.

Having spoken to hundreds of ambitious rising leaders and working closely with many of them—

I've seen a pattern: Many are brilliant and can do great work, but when it comes to presenting their work and advocating for themselves— they struggle.

It gets more challenging for those working in big global companies, and especially middle managers who feel the weight of responsibility leading their team while caring for their own career.

At the root of it all, they lack the feeling of safety.

"Am I doing good enough in my job and what will my bosses think of me?"

"Is what I'm about to share even worth saying? What if it sounds dumb"

In the past 10 years building my career, I rarely felt the pressure because I tried my best to be a good boss to myself and give myself the safety and freedom to try and make mistakes.

I also think "looking dumb in front of my colleagues" sound way scarier than "looking dumb in front of a potential client". If I didn't do well in a sales call or presentation, I have the next one to be better at. This is how I developed a fail forward mentality. The more I fail, the faster I progress. And this, is a huge privilege— to know that it is ok to fail, because that ironically makes us do better.

This is why I feel extremely heartened when organisations approach me with the intention to empower their rising leaders to Own their Voice. They understand the concerns of their people and want to give them the permission to advocate for themselves.

A recent L&D manager shared with me how the've invited Harvard researchers and these experts to come and speak to their leaders, but the feedback was people didn't relate to them much.

This shows that what we KNOW logically won't be practiced if we haven't experienced an actual emotional shift within us to do it. I understand this all to well.

Having struggled with self-doubt and impostor syndrome all my life, it wasn't logic or theory that helped me take action, but rather, the care and connection I've experienced through someone's story— be it through books, keynotes, or conversations over coffee.

There is so much power in connection. When done well, it can empower someone to do something they never thought they'd do. That's why I enjoy speaking so much— to see the 'aha' moment in their eyes, I know they've become a new person in real time.

If you're currently struggling with self-doubt, fear of speaking, and overall holding back when you know you have valuable perspectives to share, I'll love to invite you to an upcoming Free Webinar I'll be teaching This Thursday (literally tomorrow!)
