Writing is therapeutic.

Writing is hard. Writing is easy. Writing is gut-wrenching and soul-troubling and writing makes me anti-social. There are days I prefer the company of my characters and listening to them talk rather than sitting at a table with real live humans listening to the constant griping over matters in which they have no real control. Ironically, the matters in which they are in full command over, are sitting in the corner, stinking up the place. Que sera, sera.

For me, more than anything, writing is therapeutic. I get to spend time working through issues in my head, and potential relationships I have with others and rewriting the ending for the happily ever after. Yes, I know, it's not realistic, but you try having a conversation with a person who from the onset has determined you are wrong. I can continue to be wrong, close my mouth, and keep the peace. However, in my story, this person has an incurable butt rash that smells like tuna soaked in vegetable oil. See, don't we feel better? I know I do.

In my stories, in my writing, and in my crafting, I find solace. I dig deep to find the good in others who possess a willingness to let go of all preconceived notions and allow that person to be who they are. There is no need to change the person or character. However, if I continue to work at it, continue to tap away at the keys, and continue to flesh out the character, he or she will change on their own. That character who is the town curmudgeon, will want to be better because, in her eyes, she sees him. In her eyes, she sees the man he wanted to be before life ran up on him and socked him in the neck. In her eyes, he can see himself in a different light.

In her eyes she sees the story of a man finding his way to love again. Writing his story is hard. Writing his story is easy. Writing his story is gut-wrenching and soul-troubling and determining how he is going to make his first move, takes me weeks. Those weeks turn into a month and in that month, I am back to being anti-social.

At the end of the story, at the end of his book, at the end of his journey to a new found sense of self, he learns to again love. For me, his redemption is my therapy.

Writing, for me, is therapeutic.

Loads of love, Olivia
