New Classics Author Visit with C.E. White
Sep 11, 2024 4:30 pm
Greetings, New Classics Subscribers!
Let’s start the school year off with introducing everybody to a fantastic new member of our New Classics Study Guides “family.” C.E. (Connie) White brings her Vincent in Wonderland book for middle-grade to our collection. Of course, as with all New Classics authors, C.E. has written a study guide to accompany this fun fantasy novel. It’s free to download. We could tell you a lot about C.E. and her books, but I think it would be more fun if you clicked the video link and listened to Phyllis Wheeler sit down with Connie in the first of three author visits. How do I find new authors for New Classics?
My vision for New Classics Study Guides is to offer a number of recent "great books" for kids on a website, with study guides available for free download. When I was homeschooling, I really loved having study guides because they allowed my students to work independently. Having a lot of these to choose from is perfect for many homeschooling moms. And . . . created by the author? Free? What's not to like?
Study guides must be for just the right books. In today's publishing environment, Christian parents are especially challenged to find books they deem appropriate for Christian education. In many communities, the library isn't the resource that it used to be.
So . . . why me? I am a former editor and publisher, so I am qualified to evaluate fiction.
New Classics has grown into a vibrant group, with a number of authors pitching in to get things done. It's not just me anymore! However, I am the one at the forefront of finding new authors.
How do I locate such great books and authors?
I belong to a number of writers' organizations, mostly Christian. I also attend homeschool conventions and keep my eye out while I'm there. I look for authors who write good, strong chapter or middle-grade books. These books must show families in a positive light and teach moral values. Our authors are Christians. How do I know? They belong to writers' organizations that require them to declare that the Bible is true. Or, I ask them.
When I discover a new writer, I buy their book and read it. If I determine it's a "new classic," I approach the author and ask if he or she might be willing to create a study guide to accompany the book. I am especially pleased if the study guide is written by the author, who knows the book better than anyone. If the author agrees, it typically takes a while. But the author eventually comes (with their study guide), and they are added to our website. Then, I like to introduce the authors in three short (5-minute) videos.
So, stay tuned! There's more to come!
