Greetings, New Classics Followers!

This month, New Classics Study Guides caught up with author Rob Currie (Hunger Winter) to find out what he's working on these days. Here's Rob with his answers!

WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT RIGHT NOW?

I get excited by the surprising turns that occur in the process of writing. Just as a story has plot twists, so does the writing process. For nearly a year, as I worked on my current project (book 3, with the working title, Running Out of Time), I was excited by an engaging character that I couldn’t wait to share with readers. But then a more interesting character showed up and there was no longer enough room for the original character in the story.

Another aspect of surprises in writing is that none of my three published books started out as book projects. Life or God (or both) hoodwinked me by getting me to do a few speeches or write some short articles and over time, and these grew into books. Each was like a long-term friendship that unexpectedly blossomed into romance.

SO, ROB, WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE, WRITING-WISE, AT THE MOMENT?

Along with the interesting surprises of writing are some challenges. One of the hardest challenges with writing historical fiction is to find a great story that is relatively unknown. But the little-known stories are usually harder to find. Here’s an example.

For one of my future book projects, I read one paragraph that fascinated me about the liberation of a concentration camp. But to be accurate, I needed a lot more information. After weeks of searching, I still only had one paragraph.

God ultimately provided all the information I will need, and that was a wonderful answer to prayer. I wonder why I try so hard sometimes to do these things on my own instead of relying more on God and the help He can give.

. . . is an award-winning author who has been reading World War II books since he was a teenager. Life conspired to get him to write Hunger Winter. Rob’s father is a World War II veteran, his wife is of Dutch descent, and his son wrote a short story about World War II in the Netherlands. I guess you could say he finally took the hint!
