The Unnamed Newsletter

Hey,
I'm back for 2021 with regular thoughtful notes in your inbox - and I'm finally ready to give this newsletter a name. Have an idea? Submit it here.
Here's...
Something to think on in your week:
Are you prioritising your "peak period" for deep work during your days?
Quotes to support your thinking:
- “[T]he performance change between the daily high point and the daily low point can be equivalent to the effect on performance of drinking the legal limit of alcohol,” - Russel Foster, Neuroscientist and Chronobiologist at the University of Oxford
- "Deep work is great. Having a proven system for accessing flow states, eradicating distractions, and getting more done is imperative to success. But to effectively use such a system, one cannot ignore the biological realities at play in our lives. Your magic time is the time of the day when you are 5-10X more energetic, focused, and disciplined than any other time of the day." - The Perfect Week Formula, Craig Ballantyne
- “Whatever you do, do not let mundane tasks creep into your peak period.” - When, Daniel Pink
Action steps to consider:
- Start by recognising your peak period for work during the day. Most people describe themselves as either morning people (“larks”) or evening people (“owls”). However, it turns out that the majority of us are somewhere in between: “third birds.” Which one are you? If you need guidance, try When by Daniel Pink*.
- Start to plan your peak periods in advance, dedicating them to deep work that requires long periods of focus. In your peak period, create an environment free from distraction. Plan your shallow work for outside of your peak periods.
Appreciate you,
Michelle
