Life Notes: What to buy to make you happier

Mar 15, 2021 1:01 am

Hey,

Welcome to the Life Notes Newsletter - a newsletter filled with actionable notes on life.

Here's...

Something to think on in your week:

  • How many of your most recent purchases have given you ongoing happiness?

A quote to support your thinking:

  • "If your goal is to make yourself happier but you're a person who likes stuff, then you should buy things that are going to engage your senses. You're going to be just as happy as if you buy a life experience because in some sense this product is going to give you a life experience." - Researchers, San Francisco

Action steps to consider:

  • Look at your bank account purchases from two months ago and ask yourself how much they're currently impacting your life. Maybe your beach umbrella is still bringing you joy every weekend - but your handbag isn't doing the same.
  • Create a "Wishlist" and add any new thing that you want to buy to it as you come across them. Rate your wish list items based on how much they'll impact your life in years to come, writing down how they'll improve your life (think: time-saving, stress reduction, improving physical health, create connection). Prioritize the purchases with the biggest impact.
  • Prioritise experiences and connection and things that help you to create more experiences and connection. Things like books, video games, board games, musical instruments, and watercolor sets can enrich your life more than other materialistic goods.

Appreciate you,

Michelle
