Embracing the Moments That Make Us Human

Hey ,
Have you ever been reprimanded by someone—a parent, teacher, or authority figure—after making a mistake? For many of us, these moments leave a lasting impact, sometimes pushing us to seek validation from others without even realizing it.
Just yesterday, I experienced a moment that reminded me how important it is to offer understanding instead of judgment. I was buying a winter jacket for my son at Winners. The young lady at the checkout, a lovely Jamaican immigrant, was clearly a bit anxious. I could feel her nervousness grow as she fumbled and stuttered through our interaction.
After ringing up my order, she kindly told me the total—$121.48. I handed her $130 in cash. Then, a small mistake happened: she accidentally completed the transaction without entering the cash amount, and she struggled to calculate the change due. Her demeanor shifted; she looked defeated, as if this small error had drained her confidence.
Rather than point out what she owed me, I gave her an encouraging smile and told her it was no big deal. I reassured her these things happen and that she could take her time to figure it out. I wanted her to know she was safe to learn and grow in that moment, without fear of reprimand.
Her supervisor was nearby, and though a line had formed, I also thanked her for her patience, letting them both know how much I’d enjoyed this shopping experience. I usually shop online, but that day was different—it felt meaningful.
In moments like these, we’re reminded that our frustrations are ours to manage, and we can create safe spaces for others to simply be human. Mistakes are opportunities to grow, laugh, and connect in the beauty of everyday life.
Wishing you a wonderful day,
Monty
