Why Every Business Is A Tech Company

Nowadays, all businesses are tech businesses... at least in a way.

Growing up watching cartoons and movies from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, I was captivated by visions of the future. Today, as we look around, it’s clear that we are not just dreaming—we are living in a version of that future. If we compare where business, technology, and society stood from 1990 to now, the transformation is remarkable.

In my recent experience with various clients and businesses, finding an organization that does not significantly rely on technology solutions is challenging. Whether you are a large enterprise, small firm, startup company, solopreneur or otherwise, your use of technology is likely significant.

Consider a local store that uses a point-of-sale system to manage transactions. Without this technology, the store would struggle to operate efficiently and compete with larger retailers. Or think about a non-profit that leverages donor management platforms to manage its supporter list and raise funds. Without these tools, their outreach efforts would be severely limited.

With such examples in mind, let me ask: How do you see your business as a tech company? Unless you clearly work in tech, likely you don’t. But I contend that you are. Your outputs may not resemble those of the traditional tech giants, but your dependence on technology is undeniable.

Consider this: if we remove the technology you use daily, how feasible would it be for you to operate? The answer is likely that it would become extremely challenging, if not impossible. Think of the effort you'd have to revert to "the old ways of doing things" we used in the 1990s.

Recognizing your business as a tech company—in this way—can unlock new opportunities for innovation and growth to empower your true mission. It encourages a mindset shift, allowing you to leverage technology as a core component of your business strategy rather than just another tool.

Let’s embrace the reality that technology is integral to every business. Let me know how I can help.

Your Tech Pal,
