Help from unexpected places (and people)

In the twists and turns of life, there are moments when it feels as if adversity is around every corner. At times, our foes seem too many and too mighty. Yet, as we journey through 1 Samuel 19, we witness the profound ways God sends help, often from the least expected quarters.

And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David. And Jonathan told David, 'Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself.' - 1 Samuel 19:1-2 (ESV)

Just chapters ago, it might have seemed logical for Jonathan to be envious of David, given David's rising popularity and destiny to the throne, which Jonathan was heir to. Instead, Jonathan chooses friendship over rivalry, and righteousness over envy.

Later, Michal, David’s wife, aids his escape, despite being given to him as a trap 1 Samuel 18:21).

Michal let David down through the window, and he went away and fled and escaped. Michal took an image and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats' hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, 'He is sick.' - 1 Samuel 19:12-14 (ESV)

It’s a powerful reminder that God can use anyone to aid us, even those who might seem like potential adversaries or snares. God’s ability to protect and provide knows no bounds.

As we navigate our own challenges, let us remember David’s story. Even in the midst of seemingly insurmountable odds, God made a way. He brought assistance and protection from the most unexpected sources.

Prayer

Lord, in times of trial, help me to remember that You are always working in my favor. Open my eyes to see the helpers You place in my path, even if they come from unexpected places. Grant me the discernment to recognize Your hand at work and the faith to trust in Your divine assistance. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Reflection

1. Have you ever experienced unexpected help or support during challenging times? How did it shape your perspective on God's provision?

2. How can you foster an attitude of trust, like David, believing that God will provide assistance even in dire situations?

3. In what ways can you be a Jonathan or a Michal to someone in your life, offering help and support when it’s needed most?
