When your enemy is hurling spears

Saul hurled the spear for he thought, 'I will pin David to the wall.' But David eluded him twice. - 1 Samuel 18:11 (ESV)
Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night. - 1 Samuel 19:10 (ESV)
The life of David offers a great look at God’s unwavering protection, especially during times of danger. In 1 Samuel 18:11 and 19:10, we witness Saul, in fits of rage and jealousy, attempting to pin David to the wall with a spear. On both occasions, David evades these malicious attacks. It wasn't mere luck, Saul's bad aim, or David's agility that saved him but the divine protection of God.
Your life might not be filled with literal spears flying your way, but you certainly know what it's like to have people hurling accusations and insults, putting stumbling blocks in your path, making up stories about you, and generally being adversarial towards you. In these moments, it's easy to be consumed by fear or to act on your own impulses. Let David's story encourage you to place your faith in God, who is your ultimate protector.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, when I face the "spears" of life, remind me of Your consistent protection. Let my heart find rest in the assurance that You are my shield, my defender, and my refuge. Guide me to move not out of fear, but out of faith, knowing that You are always by my side. In Jesus' name, Amen.
