Time Well Spent: Designing a Meaningful December
Nov 29, 2023 8:01 am
As we dive into the festive whirlwind of December, German Theologian Karl Christian Tittmann's wise counsel echoes in our hearts: ": Watch the time, and make it your own so as to control it. Serve not the time, but command it, and it shall do what you approve." This wisdom is especially poignant as we strive to design December intentionally, steering clear of the aimless drift that often accompanies the holiday season.
Colossians 4:5 reminds us to make the most of the time. In the midst of the holiday hustle, where parties, extra work commitments, kids' programs, grandkids' festivities, Christmas cantatas, church plays, and meetings clamor for our attention, the need to command our time becomes even more critical.
Without strategic decisions guiding our schedule, it becomes easy to feel overwhelmed, unfocused, irritated, and disconnected from ourselves and others—right when we should be most connected.
Purposeful time choices allow us to navigate the seasonal whirlwind with clarity and grace, ensuring that each moment contributes to a meaningful and joyous December.

Prayer
Lord, amidst the hustle and bustle of December, grant me the wisdom to watch and control my time. Help me serve Your purpose by commanding each moment, making choices that reflect the true spirit of the season. May I design my days with purpose, finding joy in the midst of parties, work commitments, family events, and church activities. Amen.

Reflection
1. How can you prioritize and allocate time for meaningful activities, such as kids' and/or grandkids' programs and church events, in the midst of the holiday hustle?
2. Reflect on past Decembers. In what ways have holiday festivities taken control of your time, leading to a drift rather than intentional design?
3. Consider the various commitments vying for your time this December. How can you approach each one with intentionality, making choices that align with your values and purpose?
