Is that God's voice or mine? (Part 2)
Aug 02, 2023 9:01 am
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it. / Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)
Yesterday we looked at the first two way God speaks to us: the Scriptures (the surest way), and in the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit within our hearts.
Today we'll look at two other ways God speaks to us: through other people and through the circumstances that surround us.
1. Other People: God often speaks through godly individuals in our lives. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us that plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed. Take some time to consider the people you seek counsel from. Are they grounded in the Scriptures? Seek guidance from mature believers who are also rooted in the Word. Their wise counsel should align with biblical principles, serving as confirmation of God's leading.
2. Observing Circumstances: God's providence can be evident through circumstances, doors opening or closing, and divine appointments. Look back at significant events in your life and observe how God's hand has been at work. Have doors opened unexpectedly? Have door closed unexpectedly? Has He guided you through challenging times? Pay attention to these.
Important: What you believe you hear from others and observe in circumstances must be secondary to what you read in the written Word of God. God's Word is a firm anchor that prevents us from being swayed by emotions or misconceptions.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of godly counsel and the revelation of Your divine providence in my life. As I seek guidance from others and observe the circumstances around me, I pray that I remain firmly anchored in Your Word. Grant me the wisdom to discern Your voice in every situation and the courage to follow Your leading. May my heart be receptive to Your will, aligning my life with Your purposes. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Reflection Questions
1. How do you seek godly counsel in your decision-making process?
2. Can you recall a time when God used circumstances to guide you? How did you align those circumstances with His Word?
3. How can you ensure that you stay grounded in the Scriptures when seeking guidance from others and observing providential circumstances?
