You'll owe love for the rest of your life

Today, I want to reflect on a profound verse that carries significant weight in the context of marriage: Romans 13:8. It says, "Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law" (ESV).

Imagine life as a series of transactions. We make promises, strike deals, and sometimes incur debts. However, there's one debt that's continuous - the "love debt." Paul, the author the passage from Romans, tells us that our singular, never-ending debt is to love. In marriage, this takes on a unique resonance.

Marriage is, in many ways, a beautiful agreement. Not a business contract, but a heart's vow. Just as we wouldn't want to default on a financial debt, it's even more crucial that we not default on our love debt to our spouse. But unlike other obligations that can be settled, this love debt is ongoing. It's not about a "one-off" romantic gesture or saying "I love you" now and then. It’s about daily choosing love, in the big moments and the small ones, ensuring the account never goes into default.

It's easy to assume we've done enough or that our partner knows we love them. Yet, love is active. It's in the everyday actions, understanding, patience, and the commitment to choose love even when it’s hard. That’s the essence of the love debt – continually paying into the relationship, ensuring it remains strong and vibrant.

As you navigate the joys and challenges of married life, remember Romans 13:8. Think of the love debt not as a burden but as an opportunity - a daily reminder to cherish, respect, and love your partner unconditionally.
