Do this in remembrance of me

For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, this is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. (Luke 22:17, 19)
Luke describes the depth of the Passover meal in Luke 22:15-19. Within these verses, there’s a moment where Christ takes the bread, emblematic of His own body, breaks it, and hands it to the disciples. “Do this in remembrance of me,” He says. At this point, it’s essential to understand that Christ isn’t simply referencing the bread or the act. He’s signifying the sacrifice, the crucifixion He was to undergo.
When we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, often referred to as “Communion”; there’s an insight we risk missing. The word refers to closeness, a oneness of sorts. The name implies that we take the meal to become close to, to become one with Christ. To become one with Him, we remember not only His death but also the call for us to embrace his death on the cross. To have true communion with Christ, we must allow our old nature, our former selves, to break and fall away. We must die to our selfish ambitions, pride, and earthly desires. Just as the bread is broken, we, too, must be broken.
When we partake in the Lord’s Supper, let’s not merely consume the elements. Instead, let’s remember the Cross and the sacrifice. Let’s commit to breaking from our old nature, taking up our crosses, and truly finding that deep communion with our Savior.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I approach the table for the Lord’s Supper today, help me to do it with intention. Point my heart towards the profound sacrifice of Your Son, and help me to take up my own cross, dying to my old self to find true communion with You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Reflection Questions:
1. How does the act of breaking the bread resonate with your personal journey of breaking away from old habits?
2. How can you ensure that your participation in Communion goes beyond ritual and deepens your bond with Christ?
3. Where in your life do you need to die to self?
