There's a poetic verse in the King James Version of the bible that I want you to think about today:

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. (Proverbs 27:23).

I hear you saying, Kevin, 21st century language, please! I don't have any sheep or oxen.

Here's a translation: know where you stand financially.

I've used this verse for years as a mandate to be on top of my finances: inflows, outflows, investments, debts, savings, giving, etc.

You should, too.

If your finances are not where you'd like them to be due to a low income, debt, or no-to-low savings; you may not want to even think about your finances because it's overwhelming, depressing, or anxiety-inducing.

On the contrary, if you have an income on steroids, plenty of savings, and low-to-no debt; you may be reluctant to pay attention to your finances because it feels like you're on an unstoppable financial winning streak.

Here's the truth: whether you have a little or a lot, you need to know the "state of your flock."

Why?

If you don't have a lot, knowing the details of your finances will help you manage what you do have. Plus, you show yourself to be a candidate to possibly manage more in the future.

As the scripture says, if you're faithful with a little, you'll also be faithful with much (Luke 16:10).

Besides, you never know when things might turn around for you. Practicing good financial skills now will serve you well later should riches increase.

On the other hand, if you have an abundance, you should know the details of your finances because Proverbs 27:24 warns that wealth is not forever. It can disappear much quicker than it was gained.

If you are blessed with much, part of your gratitude to God is to be a faithful steward with what he's blessed you to acquire.

Whether you have a little or a lot, God's expecting you to be faithful with what's he's put in your hands to manage.

Be careful to know the state of your flock.

Kevin
