Critique Without Crushing: Tips for Effective Feedback
Oct 02, 2023 5:01 pm
Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man's growth without destroying his roots. (Frank A. Clark)
That's a practical way of saying: give feedback that helps, not hurts.
Too often, criticism comes across as an attack, doing more harm than good. Instead of being a tool for improvement, it becomes a source of discouragement. That, of course, drives a wedge between you and your mate.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
If you need to critique your mate, be clear and specific about what needs improvement. Avoid vague or personal jabs. Stick to the facts. Ask questions. Seek to understand. And for goodness sake, listen. If you keep criticism focused on growth and understanding, and it's done from a place of love and support for your mate, it becomes a tool, not a weapon.
Remember, the goal is to help your mate be better.
