Protect yourself: don't expect much from me

There's a song from college I loved called "Hey Jealousy" by the Gin Blossoms.
I was thinking about the song, so I looked up the lyrics. I was surprised to see lyrics I never knew were in the song:
And if you don't expect too much from me
You might not be let down
I get what they're saying: "Don't get your hopes built up so high that you get let down. After all, I'm only human."
While there's some protection in there, there's also the opportunity for a spouse saying this to get off easy. For example, if not much is expected of me, there's not much I have to do to be in a relationship with my wife.
BUT, marriages don't get better by taking the easy way out.
What would be possible if you did raise the stakes on what could be expected from you? What would be possible for your marriage? How would it change you?
Sit with these questions today. Consider how raising what your spouse can expect from you can transform you while transforming your marriage.
