Energy Well-Spent: Designing a Fulfilling December

In yesterday's devotion I shared the wisdom of Karl Christian Tittmann: "Watch the time, and make it your own so as to control it. Serve not the time, but command it, and it shall do what you approve." This counsel extends beyond the ticking clock; it encapsulates the energy we invest in each moment. Designing December involves not just managing time but also stewarding our energy with purpose.

Consider the various demands that clamor for our attention during this spirited season—holiday shopping, travel, decorating, meal prep, volunteering, year-end work responsibilities, attending special events, etc. Each of these activities, while brimming with joy, can also be energy-consuming.

It's worth noting that Jesus, who had several demands on his time and energy, designed his day. Whether it was getting up early to pray (Mark 1:35) or escaping during the middle of the day to pray (Luke 5:16), he was purposeful about ensuring he had something left in the tank for when he was called upon again (Mathew 14:13-14).

Here are two questions to ask to ensure you are designing your December vs. drifting through it:

a) Which events do I plan to attend?

b) Which items do I plan to do to protect my well-being?

In the midst of the holiday hustle, it's easy to let our energy be dispersed in countless directions, leaving us feeling drained and disconnected. However, just as we command our time, we can command our energy.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, grant me the discernment to watch and steward my energy this December. Help me serve Your purpose by commanding my vitality, making choices that reflect the true spirit of the season. May I design my days with purpose, finding joy in the midst of festivities, work commitments, family events, and church activities. Amen.

Reflection

1. How can you be intentional about conserving and wisely using your energy during the bustling December season?

2. Reflect on past Decembers. In what ways have you allowed your energy to be dispersed, leading to fatigue and a sense of disconnect?

3. Consider the various energy-consuming commitments vying for your attention this December. How can you approach each one with purpose, ensuring your vitality is invested in what truly matters?
