I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. (John 15:15, NIV)

The notion that the Creator of the universe considers us friends is both humbling and uplifting. Jesus, in His ministry, emphasized this profound relationship, moving beyond the traditional dynamics of Master and servant to something more intimate: friendship.

Disappointment, an inescapable part of the human experience, can sometimes extend to our relationship with God. We can wonder why God allows hardships into our life if we're friends. As you've likely experienced, the sting of disappointment feels more acute when it involves someone you consider a friend.

But here's a vital perspective to embrace: true friendship, even in our human understanding, isn't devoid of misunderstandings or disagreements. However, it is the foundation of trust, love, and mutual respect that helps friends navigate these challenges.

When we view our relationship with God through the lens of friendship, our disappointments take on a different meaning. They become opportunities for deeper dialogue, for seeking understanding, for leaning into the relationship rather than pulling away. Just as we'd sit down with a friend to discuss our feelings, God invites us into honest conversation with Him.

Remembering that God not only loves us but likes us, cherishes our company, and calls us friends, can be a source of solace during tough times. It means He's not a distant being in the sky, but a close confidant, guiding us through life's ups and downs. A friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). This friendship with the God empowers us to face disappointments with hope and resilience.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for calling me Your friend. In moments of disappointment, remind me of this relationship we share. Help me lean into our friendship, drawing strength and understanding from our bond. Even when I don’t comprehend everything, let the knowledge of our friendship guide and comfort me. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

1. How does understanding God as a friend influence your perspective during times of disappointment?

2. How can you deepen your friendship with God in your daily life?

3. When has a human friendship helped you navigate a difficult situation, and how can that experience mirror your relationship with God?
