Enhancing Communication: Cut Through the Mental Chatter

Ever find yourself hearing more of your thoughts than your spouse's words? It happens to the best of us. Let's break it down with an example:


Your spouse says: "You're coming home late from work tonight."


Your mind translates: "You're coming home late. Work, huh? Where were you really?"


This mental chatter is automatic, but can mess with communication. There's no magic fix, but here's a move: spot the mental commentary, acknowledge it, then push it aside so you can focus on what your mate is saying.


Warning: Your mind will chat again (it loves to). Just repeat the process.


Practice makes perfect.
