Between Past Events and Future Uncertainty: Trusting God

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.
(2 Chronicles 16:9, NKJV)
Dear ,
As humans we live in this tension:
- The result of what happened, and
- The uncertainty of what happens next
It's easy to see this in your own life if you look.
For example, as you read this email, you're in the midst of something that has already happened. And, at the same time, you're uncertain about how it is going to turn out.
This is where the hymn "My Heavenly Father Watches Over Me" is a blessing and good news to our soul.
The first verse says ...
I trust in God
Wherever I may be,
Upon the land
Or on the rolling sea;
For come what may,
From day to day,
My heavenly Father
Watches over me.
The songwriter wrote that he trusts in God.
It's worth noting that his trust was totally attached to his heavenly Father watching over him.
Likewise, our trust in God is sourced by God watching over us. Saying the same thing in another way, the only reason we can trust in God is because he watches over us. Without his watchfulness, we have no reason or grounds to trust.
Today, think about your trust in God. It all comes from you believing that he has watched over you in the past. If you didn't think he was watching you, you'd have zero reason to trust him. But, even if you trust just a smidgen, it's because you believe he has watched over you in the past.
I want you to hang onto that today. You may get news that's unexpected, disturbing frustrating, heartbreaking, or soul-dashing.
In that moment, you'll find yourself in the tension of The result of what happened, and The uncertainty of what happens next.
While in that tension, remind yourself that your heavenly Father is watching over you. That will inspire and enable you to say:
I trust in God,
I know He cares for me,
On mountain bleak
Or on the stormy sea;
Though billows roll,
He keeps my soul,
My heavenly Father
Watches over me.
See you tomorrow!
Kevin
