Our spiritual identity defined

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. (2 Corinthians 5:16-18)
There's a transformative truth that Paul shares in this passage: our identity in Christ changes everything. When we align ourselves with Christ, our old self, defined by our sins, failures, and worldly perspectives, is replaced by the new.
This new creation is not bound by past mistakes or the fleeting standards of society. Instead, it is anchored in the eternal and unchanging nature of God.
Yet, many of us struggle to fully embrace this new identity. Why? Because we often allow the flesh, our worldly desires, and societal norms to define us. The voice of our past, the opinions of others, and even our own insecurities can overshadow the affirming voice of God that calls us His beloved.
God desires to be the sole definer of our identity. When we allow Him to mold and shape our perception of self, we find freedom from the chains of the flesh. Being a new creation means that God's perspective of us—forgiven, loved, and purposeful—takes center stage.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for making me a new creation in Christ. Help me to fully step into the identity You've given me, pushing aside the worldly definitions and voices that seek to define me. Remind me daily that I am Yours and that my worth is found in being Your child. Amen.
Reflection Questions:
1. In what areas of your life are you still allowing the flesh or worldly views to define you?
2. How can you daily remind yourself of your identity as a new creation in Christ?
3. What steps can you take to ensure that God's voice is the loudest when it comes to defining who you are?
