Unseen Forces: Distinguishing the Hidden Motives
Oct 24, 2023 7:01 am
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12, NIV)
Picture this: A potter working meticulously at his wheel. Each precise movement determines the shape and purpose of the clay. But, if the potter is unaware of a flaw in the clay or chooses to ignore it, that unnoticed flaw can dictate the end product. Similarly, in our lives, what we fail to recognize or choose to ignore often ends up shaping us in ways we never intended.
The Bible reminds us of the importance of self-awareness. The New Life Version of Hebrews 4:12 says, "God’s Word is living and powerful. It is sharper than a sword that cuts both ways. It cuts straight into where the soul and spirit meet and it divides them. It cuts into the joints and bones. It tells what the heart is thinking about and what it wants to do." This powerful verse not only emphasizes the potency and discerning nature of God's word but also its role in helping us distinguish our innermost feelings, desires, and intentions.
If we do not distinguish these hidden motives, desires, and flaws, they can silently direct our actions, behaviors, and decisions. They can take control, leading us on paths we didn't consciously choose. Just as unchecked envy or jealousy can govern our feelings towards others, undistinguished fears or insecurities can lead us to make decisions out of avoidance rather than purpose.
But how do we distinguish these controlling factors? It's through consistent reflection, prayer, and immersing ourselves in the Word. When we allow the Bible to be our guide and actively engage with it, we're equipping ourselves with a tool sharper than any two-edged sword, ready to discern and tackle the unseen forces within us.
To truly live purposefully and intentionally, we must strive to recognize, acknowledge, and address the underlying factors that influence us. As we lean into God's word for guidance and clarity, we are empowered to distinguish and take control, ensuring that we are the potters of our clay, shaped not by unnoticed flaws, but by divine purpose.

Prayer
I acknowledge that sometimes I overlook or ignore the flaws and hidden motives that influence my path. Your Word, living and powerful, is the tool that sharpens my discernment, helping me distinguish my true desires and intentions. Guide me in consistent reflection and immersion in Your Word, so I can live with intention and purpose. Empower me to recognize and address what holds sway over me, ensuring my life aligns with Your divine purpose. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
