He called me back after he joked on his wife

This afternoon a friend's wife and I were on the phone going over the details of some work I'm doing for their new business venture. Her husband came into the room, and made a joke about his wife. We all laughed, and moved on.

Kinda.

Thirty minutes later he called back, with his wife on speaker phone, and apologized for disrespecting his wife.

He knew what he said wasn't true and was a joke.

I knew it wasn't true.

His wife knew I knew it wasn't true.

And none of that mattered.

There are several lessons to emphasize here, but I'll choose one:

Be humble enough to express regret and/or apologize, even if it's not your idea.

Knowing my friend like I do, it wasn't his idea to call me. But, he did. And, he didn't have to. I can imagine he was slightly embarrassed calling one of his guy friends to apologize, but he got beyond it.

He may have been thinking that his wife was being too sensitive, needed to lighten up, and laugh a little. And none of that mattered. He called and apologized.

Now look inwardly, .

Where do YOU need to express regret or apologize, not because you want to, but because it's the right thing to do?
