We need to talk about Battlestar Galactica.

I am honestly shocked that anyone watched TV before streaming services existed at all.

I know we did, but it's weird to think about now. I guess we were all just hoping to catch our favorite show, regardless of what we had going on in our lives, and if we couldn't, we set the VCR to record it.

That is wild.

I was thinking about how it wasn't until about ten years ago that I finally watched a TV show all the way through. It wasn't for lack of trying. But growing up, I was literally the only person in my house that didn't have a TV in their room, and I never got to control the living room TV remote. Then, when I moved out, I never paid for cable. And when I was still waiting tables and bartending, it's not like the good shows were on at 11 AM when I was available to watch them.

But now, I have perhaps more streaming services than is advisable, and can watch whatever I want, whenever I want. And this is why I finally watched Battlestar Galactica.

I remember when the show was on the air, and hearing ads for it. I walked around for weeks back in like 2009 saying, "You are a harbinger of death, Kara Thrace," just because I'd heard it on so many commercials for the show, despite never having seen an episode.

So, a few months back, I asked Chris if he wanted to watch Battlestar Galactica. And he said yes. This is not a normal occurrence for him. It's not that he doesn't like TV. He just doesn't like how I HAVE TO binge watch a show if we have access to all the episodes. And he's an adult with the ability to turn the TV off, and he knows if we start a show, I will sit there in front of the TV like a zombie until it's done.

So we started the show, and finally finished this past week. Here are my thoughts, in no particular order, with minimal spoilers:

  • Elon Musk is our Gaius Baltar.
  • I would not survive in space.
  • How many of my friends are actually Cylons?
  • Why does Six dress that way?
  • OMG the actress who plays Six also plays Charlotte Richards in Lucifer.
  • They really picked a few specific characters to be vessels for sadness and pain.
  • I like how the costume department just used janky Reebok high tops for the space suit shoes.
  • Cylon ships and goo baths borrow heavily from The Matrix's aesthetic.
  • Does this space military organization have no haircut regulations?
  • The premise of a nearly-decommissioned spaceship with a nearly-retired commander at the helm is going in my brain warehouse for later use.

I have a lot more thoughts, but don't want to spoil it for anyone, especially since it looks like they're making a reboot. So, go watch it now so you're ready for the new show.

(Yes, I know the 2004 version is also a reboot. WE ARE GOING TO REBOOT THE REBOOT!)

Also, I probably won't watch the new show until it's finished and available for streaming. Because that's the only way I watch shows, apparently.

On The Blog

I have been STRUGGLING with motivation lately. I used to be really good at tackling projects and setting personal deadlines. But lately? Not so much. I'm sure this is the effects of pandemic fatigue/Zoom burnout. Then, I realized I really just needed to change some habits.
