I am not a winter girl, gang.
I live in Oklahoma, and any time the temperature drops below 50 degrees, I get concerned. And when it snows…lord help me.
It’s not that I don’t like snow days. I do! In fact, as a resident of a place that rarely gets snow, I find it novel. Snow days are great.
And occasionally, we get snow days with no snow. (That’s where the snow is expected, so schools go ahead and close early in order to give parents time to find childcare. Then, it never actually snows.)
This past week we got an absurd amount of snow. Chris and I lamented a few times that we don’t have a snow shovel, though we saw them for sale last week at the grocery store and both thought separately we should get one. Naturally, neither of us did.
And then, on Wednesday afternoon, the snow came. And it didn’t really stop until early Friday morning.
There’s something about snow right now that just isn’t as much fun as it used to be. Yes, I’m an adult and I work for myself and it’s not like I would go outside and build a snowman. But any other time, I would probably call it a day and bake something with tons of cinnamon and butter.
I kind of just wish the weather would’ve read the room, you know? Snow days in the middle of a peak of a pandemic surge just don’t feel that great.
And because schools are so used to remote learning these days, all my friends with kids were posting on Facebook about how there wasn’t actually a snow day. It was officially a distance learning day.
So it’s not like anyone was getting any joy out of the experience.
I guess it’s fitting that Imbolc was this past week. Imbolc is a Pagan holiday that starts the evening of February 1, and ends the evening of February 2. It’s a celebration of spring being on its way.
There are tons of ways you can celebrate Imbolc in a traditional way. But I know altars and rituals aren’t for everyone. Instead, I’m going to point you to a book blogger.
Every February 2, Modern Mrs. Darcy posts about the 10 things that are saving her life. She also has a contentious relationship with winter, and I love the idea of focusing on the things that make you happy in a time that is hellbent on making you sad.
(I'm pretty sure she isn't trying to celebrate Imbolc, so she may resent having her post associated with a Pagan tradition. But this is my newsletter and I do what want.)
So, with all that, I thought it might be fun to share the 10 things that are saving my life right now, in the midst of this winter weather and ::gestures wildly:: in this whole dreary hellscape.
- Looking forward to and planning a really big, ambitious writing project.
- Cardamom green tea.
- Frozen bao from our local pan-Asian grocery store.
- Our gas log fireplace that I can light super easily every day.
- Watching my dog’s irritation with the Roomba escalate into a full-on vendetta.
- Organizing a Trapper Keeper for the aforementioned really big, ambitious writing project.
- Afternoon naps.
- Having a flexible schedule.
- Watching Battlestar Galactica for the first time. (It’s good, but soooo early 2000s.)
- Feeling hopeful for the first time in a really long time.
If you have some time today, make a list of what’s saving your life right now. It’s a nice reminder that not everything is terrible.
