Every store I walk into has candy corn for sale and it took every last ounce of willpower I had to not buy a pumpkin-shaped Dutch oven at Tuesday Morning Mall.

Fall is here...supposedly.

I know I'm not alone in my skepticism. I live in Oklahoma and temperature highs will still be well into the 90s until October. Also, we haven't even hit the fall equinox yet.

Even so, my husband and I are planning for a very cozy near future where the leaves turn. It's a future where I can wear a hoodie and wool socks. We'll rewatch our autumn favorites (mostly Over the Garden Wall and The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and I'll get to celebrate the greatest holiday of them all--SOUP DAY!

(I know last week I said the first home football game of the season is my favorite holiday. There is a non-zero chance that I don't understand the concept of favorites and just like stuff a lot.)

Soup Day is the day where I make a bunch of soups all at once. I chop all the onions, carrots, and celery. I brown bacon in the bottom of various pots. I fry up those vegetables in the bacon grease, and then we go straight to soup town.

Naturally, there's an herby potato soup, this brothy chick pea pasta soup with tons of added veggies, and you can't go wrong with a 15 bean soup.

But this year, we're going to the next level. My husband let it slip that he likes hominy, and my girl, Claudia, recently made both a white pozole and a green pozole.

So, naturally, these will be added to the Soup Day rotation.

(Side note: I'm making these jalapeรฑo popper chicken breasts today for football game watchin'.)

Is Soup Day just a weird way that I get excited about meal prep? Yeah. Mostly. It's a joy to meal prep in the fall, and to have an abundance of warming foods.

After Soup Day, my freezer is full of soup! I portion it out so that each container is roughly one meal's worth for the two of us, and all I have to do for weeks is pull out a soup tub and heat it up.

Is this how our ancestors felt when they stockpiled food for the cold winter ahead? Probably.

I mean, I mostly do it so I can have more time to watch my favorite fall movies on week nights and not for survival.

Though, I'm sure our ancestors would've loved watching Over the Garden Wall if they had the technology to do so.

So, until Soup Day, I will continue to sweat my ass off, dreaming of a time when it's cool enough to feel cozy.
