3 Simple Tips to Handle Triggers with Grace ✨

Yesterday, I had a moment that brought me to tears. I felt so triggered—like everything someone said hit a nerve I didn’t even realize was raw. The emotions came flooding in—hurt, anger, confusion—and before I knew it, I was spiraling. 😔


In the past, something like this would have thrown me off for an entire day (or more). I’d get caught up in those emotions and struggle to find my way back to peace. But this time was different.


Instead of waiting for the other person to validate my feelings, I realized something powerful: I can honor my emotions myself. I don’t need anyone else to make me feel understood. So, I sat with my tears, letting the emotions wash over me, and allowed myself to just be. 🌿


It wasn’t easy, but it was healing. I validated my own feelings and reminded myself that I could hold space for my pain. And that’s where I found peace.

We’ve all had moments like this—when someone’s words or actions trigger us, and suddenly we’re caught up in a whirlwind of emotions. It’s normal, but we don’t have to be at the mercy of those reactions. 💡


In therapy, I learned a very simple yet powerful concept called cope ahead, and it’s been life-changing. It’s all about preparing for those triggering moments, so when they happen, we’re ready to stay calm and grounded. 🧘‍♀️


Here are 3 tips that have helped me plan ahead for triggers:

  1. Recognize your triggers: What behaviors or situations tend to push your buttons? 🤔 Take time to notice patterns in your emotional responses.
  2. Create a game plan: Think about how you can respond next time. Whether it’s taking a deep breath, pausing, or stepping away, having a plan helps you stay in control. 📝
  3. Use affirmations: Remind yourself, “I can honor my emotions without reacting impulsively,” or “I choose peace over reaction.” These words can help ground you in the moment. 🌟
