You’ve probably heard the phrase “dopamine detox” floating around social media lately.

It sounds fancy and a little mysterious, right?

But what does it actually mean?

Let’s clear it up.

First: Dopamine is a hormone and neurotransmitter that’s one of your brain’s “feel-good” chemicals. It helps regulate motivation, focus, and reward.

You get little dopamine boosts when you eat, exercise, check your phone, or finish a task.

It’s not bad… and you actually need dopamine to function.

Real dopamine disorders are linked to conditions like Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia, not everyday distractions or scrolling habits.

So when you see people online talking about a “dopamine detox,” what they’re actually talking about is taking a break from overstimulation and nonstop inputs…

and also resetting your brain’s reward system so you can feel more focused and present again.

If you're a busy individual over 40s juggling work, family, and health goals, this can make a big difference for your hormones and your energy.

Why does this all matter so much:

When your brain is constantly seeking input or stimulation (like notifications, audiobooks, podcasts, caffeine, snacks, or internet memes), it can keep your “fight or flight” hormones running high.

You might feel amped up, restless, and it can be a struggle to slow down or sleep well.

Taking breaks from all that input helps you feel rebalanced.

Simple ways to “detox” the healthy way:

Phone-free mornings. Wait 30 minutes after waking up before checking messages or social media.

Single-task instead of multi-task. Focus on one thing at a time."]

Schedule real breaks. Go for a walk, breathe, or step outside without your phone.

Fuel your brain. Eat balanced meals with protein and healthy fats. Dopamine relies on amino acids and a steady blood sugar level.

Remember: sometimes the most important “input” you need is from your own inner voice… and if it’s constantly being drowned out by overstimulation, you might just miss an important message! (Ask me how I know that! 😂)

Keep up the good work,

Coach Lu
