Did You Know?

Although I have lived most of my life in the US, I'm still an immigrant learning many of the struggles for acknowledgment Black Americans have gone through. Today is one of them.

I learned today that as we celebrate Memorial Day, the holiday is also rooted in Black history. Once called Decoration Day in the 1860s, the day commemorated the Union soldiers who died fighting for their emancipation. As part of their ritual to remember and consecrate the fallen soldiers, they sang freedom songs, decorated their resting places, and finished the day off with a picnic.

I'm always humbled to learn what and how Black people show they are the heart of this country. We know Black people literally built the historical structures admired by architects worldwide to this day. Their contributions to literature, science, music, academia, and culture continue to be exploited without proper acknowledgment.

So I wish to celebrate your loved ones who fought and died for this country, be they friends or family. Their names may not be known to all, but you knowing them and remembering them for the people they were and their bravery is always worth respect and the flowers they deserved.
