What happened when I scored portfolios live today

Mar 17, 2026 9:56 am

Just wrapped the Portfolio Roast.

One thing that came up in every single portfolio I reviewed today:

The strongest work was buried.

Not missing. Buried. Under process descriptions. Under methodology sections. Under "Discovery → Define → Design → Deliver" timelines that every portfolio has and no hiring manager reads.

The moments that would actually get someone hired — the decision they made that changed the project, the metric that moved because they were in the room, the stakeholder conflict they navigated — those were either in paragraph 4 of a case study or not written down at all.

One designer had led a product redesign that reduced support tickets by 40%. It was mentioned in a single sentence near the bottom of a 2,000-word case study.

That sentence should have been the headline.

This is what the Hands look like in the scoring system. The substance is there. The signal isn't.
