Southernism of the Week: Like buzzards roosted in it: how one’s mouth feels after a night of corn whiskey. (From You All Spoken Here by Roy Wilder)
Can you believe it’s been twenty years since Sweet Home Alabama came out? Glacier Cinema in Juneau, Alaska – Doug and Kris’s hometown – will be hosting a free 20th anniversary screening of the movie at 10 am on July 2. Doug will be doing a brief Q&A afterwards. Doug is also doing a book signing on July 2 at 2 pm at Hearthside Books in the Nugget Mall and maybe a second signing on the 3rd at Fisherman’s Wharf. If you’re in Juneau that weekend, come say Hi!
Here's Doug gold panning at Gold Creek:
Woo hoo, he's rich now!
Voice recognition error of the day: I hope to see you too soon!😆 (the important difference between too and two).
Bonus: "Extra bras! They'll keep you going, baby!" at least that's what it sounded like the 60ish man getting out of an old, battered truck at the college campus said as Kris jogged by. Doesn't really make sense (in any context), and we usually don’t get catcalled around here, so what else might he have been trying to say? Perhaps “Exercise, that'll keep you going … maybe!”
Something Deadly on Desert Drive is out! “In the humorous Accidental Detective series, a witty journalist solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. Now Kate's father and his coffee group are worried. Their friend Larry married a younger woman who now claims he has dementia. They think she's lying. Before they can dig out the truth, a murder raises the stakes, and Kate's father is among the suspects. To save him and Larry, Kate must reveal the real murderer – but her investigation could put all their lives at risk.” (Click on the highlighted title above for all retailer links.)
Southern Treat of the Week: Roman Candy: "The Roman Candy Company began as a family treat with a recipe that dates back at least four generations... Sam Cortese, who was a street vendor by trade since the age of 12, would on occasion bring [his mother's] left over candy on his fruit and vegetable wagon to sell the next day... Sam realized he would have to find a way to make his Roman Candy as he rolled along and sold it. In 1915, he went to a wheelwright named Tom Brinker and together they designed the wagon that is still used today." Learn more.

(Just kidding. They have air conditioning and nap like this year-round.)
