An Alabama ghost story: The Ghostly Foreman of Sloss Furnaces: Sloss Furnaces opened in 1882 in the new city of Birmingham. It quickly became a major providers of pig iron in America, but it was a dangerous place to work. Many workers were severely injured or died. Foreman James “Slag” Wormwood pushed employees to take greater risks to increase production. When he disappeared in 1906, rumors said a group of workers fed Slag to the furnace. For years afterward, employees claimed they felt a push from behind or heard a mysterious voice say, “get back to work.” Once, three supervisors were found unconscious, locked in a boiler room. They claimed a burned man shouted at them to “push more steel.” The furnaces were shut down in 1971, but people still reported ghostly screams and apparitions. The legacy of death and cruelty lives on…
