Doug shares a few more pics from his Alabama trip: These are pictures from Oakleigh Plantation near Mobile, the inspiration for the Carmichael Plantation in the book/movie. Here's the dining room - pretty fancy, huh?:

When the house was built, there was a “door tax” that would apply a tax based on the number of doors in a house. So the builders would build windows with lower sections that would open so they could create doors onto balconies without having to pay the tax. You can see one of these window/doors here:
