Prickly pear and some types of cholla cactus are common, along with mesquite, sagebrush, and creosote. Many authors who set books in New Mexico have to explain to their cover designers that There are no saguaro in New Mexico! (Well, there’s at least one, in a neighbor’s yard, but it was transplanted there and needs to be wrapped up to stay warm in cold weather.)
