Inspiring Mobile, best romantic comedy films

May 24, 2020 3:21 am

Rom-Com News asked Doug Eboch what are his five favorite romantic comedy films (besides “Sweet Home Alabama,” of course.) He answered:

“The Apartment” – It has a clever conceit and likable, complex, wounded characters. And Billy Wilder’s dialogue, of course!

“Amelie” – This French film is full of magical realism charm, and who wouldn’t fall in love with Audrey Tautou?”

“When Harry Met Sally…” – One of the most realistic modern romantic comedies. And, one of the funniest!

“Notting Hill” – Richard Curtis is great at the genre, and this is my favorite.

“Roxanne” – Steve Martin updates “Cyrano de Bergerac” to modern times and the result is hilarious

The gorgeous Battle House Hotel in Mobile was the inspiration for the pageant hotel in “Felony Melanie in Pageant Pandemonium.” The current building was built in 1908, after the original 1852 hotel started by James, John, and Samuel Battle burned down. The hotel was Andrew Jackson’s headquarters during the war of 1812. Here are some pictures of parts of the hotel that inspired specific locations in the book.
