It Didn't Land the Same Way

Dear ,
I want to share something real with you.
A friend called me recently. It was a Tuesday morning—I had the day off and was sitting with my breakfast, easing into what I thought would be a warm, easy start to the day.
I answered, expecting something light.
Instead, the lecture began.
“Oh Sandy, are you eating again?”
And from there, without hesitation, came all the ways I was “too fat,” “unhealthy,” and everything else that tends to come with that kind of conversation.
What I had anticipated as a gentle, nourishing moment… could have easily derailed.
And if I’m honest—this would have gotten to me before.
Not on the outside. I’ve always known how to stay composed.
But inside, I would’ve felt it. The tightening. The replaying of the words. The quiet need to defend, explain, or prove something—even if only to myself.
But this time… something was different.
I listened.
I said, “Thanks.”
And when the call ended, I just sat there for a moment.
Then I laughed. Softly.
Not because it was funny, but because I could see it so clearly.
Here was someone speaking so confidently about my health, while dealing with his own very real challenges… and for the first time, I didn’t feel the need to take any of it in.
No tightening.
No spinning thoughts.
No emotional hangover.
Just… space.
And that felt new.
It made me realize that this Soul Repair work we’ve been doing together isn’t just something we think about—it’s something that quietly changes how we experience ourselves in the world.
So I want to ask you:
Where have you noticed a shift like this?
Maybe something was said… and it didn’t land the same way.
Maybe you didn’t react as quickly.
Maybe you let something pass that you would have held onto before.
It might feel small.
But it’s not.
These are the moments that tell the truth.
You are changing—even in ways you don’t always see right away.
And that matters.
With you in this work,
Dr. Sandra Hamilton
