Confidence isn’t about matching energy.

Dear ,

Confidence isn’t about matching energy. It’s about mastering yours.

For a long time, I misunderstood maturity. I thought it meant absorbing what hurt, smoothing over what was misaligned, and carrying the emotional weight of other people’s choices.

Then I experimented with “matching energy”… and realized something important:

Reactive energy—whether soft or sharp—will drain you every time.

On my desk, I keep a sign that reads:

“Be careful of the energy you bring in here. I will return it to you.”

It reminds me daily that I don’t have to shrink, chase, or contort myself. I simply have to stay rooted in my own standard.

Pay attention to the people who ask you to dim your light, explain yourself twice, or step out of integrity just to keep the peace. That tension you feel is not chemistry. It’s a caution.

True confidence is choosing steadiness over performance, alignment over approval, and peace over proving a point.

Because the right people will never require you to betray yourself to belong.

And once you experience what it feels like to be calm, seen, and steady around someone, you stop romanticizing the chaos you once called connection.

Be comfortable with yourself!

Sincerely,

Dr Sandra Hamilton
