Coach ,

One of the biggest names in coaching, Alabama Assistant Coach Ryan Pannone is known in our sport as a human Chat GPT on everything a basketball coach could know.

Coach Pannone has coached at every level from HS to NBA and is a master student at breaking down how the best coaches attack and defend every move the opposing coach gives them to perfection.

I was excited to study his deep dive into International Tactics, Concepts, and Trends Masterclass

Here are 3 things that Coach Pannone covered in the course that I thought were interesting.

  1.   Attacking heavy nail coverage with movement  When watching a Spanish professional game last season I noticed a team would twist their middle ball screen and come back in the direction of the double side like this.

The purpose, according to Coach Pannone, was to put pressure on X3 to help on 1’s drive or stay with 3, since 5’s defender was back.

  1.  Emphasis on Rejecting Screens:  Coach Pannone stressed that PNR coverages are not designed for failure, so no matter what coverage you are seeing, the threat to reject the screen needs to be your first option.

  1.  Jumping into Zone vs. Posts Ups:  Coach Pannone showed how Zalgiris, the top professional team in Lithuania, would quickly go zone anytime the ball was thrown into the post. Click the video below for his analysis.
