snow days

As we embark on a new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and contemplating our aspirations for the future--especially when Mother Nature dumps a peaceful blanket of snow out my window.

For some, it involves setting grand, ambitious goals that span years or even decades. However, for others, like myself, the essence lies in the philosophy of Kaizen – the art of continuous improvement through small, incremental changes.

Every year, I revisit a quote that resonates deeply with me, steering away from the conventional long-term goal-setting mindset. Instead, I choose to focus on the significance of micro goals and the futility of aiming for monumental achievements in a single stride.

In essence, my approach is rooted in the principle of Kaizen, emphasizing the importance of gradual, continuous improvement. Rather than fixating on lofty goals set for the distant future, I strive to become better every single day in some way. The emphasis is on the journey, not a destination that might be years away.

While the Kaizen philosophy is often associated with business and productivity, its principles are equally applicable to personal development. It encourages a mindset shift from the overwhelming pursuit of major milestones to the appreciation of small victories, recognizing that lasting change often stems from consistent, incremental efforts.

Unlike those who set their sights on big, long-term goals, my focus is on the here and now. I contemplate the skills I haven't learned or need improvement, using these reflections as a compass for my personal growth. Each passing year becomes an opportunity to evaluate the progress made, celebrating the skills honed and acknowledging areas that still await exploration.

As I look to another year, I find myself chuckling at the tasks yet to be accomplished – writing a sonnet, butchering a hog, and planning an invasion. I mean three left isn't bad right? And while these might sound like far-fetched endeavors, they encapsulate the spirit of breaking down seemingly monumental tasks into manageable, achievable steps.

This year, my focus is on these peculiar challenges, taking them bit by bit while simultaneously enhancing other aspects of my life. The idea is not to overwhelm myself with the pressure of achieving grandiose objectives but to enjoy the process of continuous self-improvement, relishing in the small victories along the way.

As we collectively embrace the dawn of a new year, let's consider the power of micro goals and the beauty of the Kaizen philosophy. By shifting our focus from the overwhelming burden of colossal resolutions to the joy of incremental progress, we can make each New Year's Eve truly effective – a celebration of growth, resilience, and the pursuit of becoming a better version of ourselves, one small step at a time.
