What AI Can’t Replace (and Why That Matters More Than Ever)

May 05, 2025 5:57 pm

A client recently sent me a clip of Tim Ferriss interviewing Chris Sacca, where Sacca basically said, “We're screwed.” AI is coming for jobs like lawyers and accountants—and it’s not just theory anymore. He’s already replaced some of the legal work in his own businesses with AI tools. And that got me thinking…

Yes, AI will absolutely replace a lot of jobs. But we’re thinking about it all wrong.

It’s not about AI replacing humans—it’s about AI accelerating tasks. And in some cases, we might not want those tasks done faster. For example:

  • Legal/contracts? Sure—if I need to adjust a lease renewal, I’ll use ChatGPT instead of calling my uncle, who happens to be a lawyer.
  • Manufacturing/shipping? I have a client installing humanoid robots to move boxes.
  • Customer service or scheduling? Absolutely—automate it.

But here’s what AI can’t do well (yet, and maybe never):

  • Human connection and empathy.
  • Being an EMT taught me this. You can’t fake empathy when someone’s having the worst day of their life. You can’t automate holding someone’s hand in the back of an ambulance.
  • Leadership and vision.
  • AI can support strategy, but it won’t rally a team behind an idea it believes in. Because it doesn’t believe in anything.
  • True creativity.
  • AI can remix, reword, reframe. But true originality? Not yet.
  • Skilled physical labor.
  • I turn wooden bowls by hand. There’s no shortcut for that. No robot’s replacing the satisfaction that comes with making something unique with your hands.

So how do we prepare people—especially our kids—for a world where automation is everywhere?

The answer might be… old school.

We need to bring vocational training back into the conversation.

In places like Princeton, the idea that a student might want to learn a trade isn’t just rare—it’s practically taboo. But that needs to change. Because:

  • Kids graduate knowing calculus but can’t change a tire.
  • They feel less resilient, less capable, and more isolated from their community.
  • CPR-certified students report feeling more independent and more willing to help others.

We need to teach life skills again. We need to prepare kids to build, fix, lead, and empathize—the things that won’t be automated.

And most importantly, we need to stop preparing kids for jobs that AI will replace before they even graduate.
