Stop Searching for Time – Make It!

We Don’t Find Time, We Make It

Hey everyone,

During a recent event, I was asked a familiar question: “With all your commitments, how do you find the time?” The answer is simple but powerful – we don’t find time; we make it.

The very notion of “finding time” is misleading. It’s like assuming there’s a hidden reserve of time waiting to be discovered. In reality, time is finite and unyielding; it’s up to us to actively allocate it based on our priorities. This approach isn’t about squeezing every last drop from your day. It’s about focusing on what truly matters and structuring your time around that.

Control Is Key

Many of us struggle with a sense of overwhelm, which is often rooted in a lack of control, not a lack of time. This is why concepts like Inbox Zero have such an impact. They provide a tangible sense of control, reducing stress and bringing clarity to our day.

Being passive—waiting to “find time”—means relinquishing control to the chaos of daily demands. This leads to stress, missed opportunities, and a general feeling of frustration. Instead, we need to take charge, be proactive, and set clear boundaries in our schedules.

The “OAO” Framework: Optimize, Automate, Outsource

The way to reclaim time is through the Optimize, Automate, and Outsource (OAO) method:

  1. Optimize: Look for inefficiencies in your routine and remove them. Whether it’s the way you manage emails or how you handle meetings, streamline to reduce unnecessary steps.
  2. Automate: Set up systems to handle repetitive tasks. This might mean using scheduling tools, automating follow-ups, or leveraging digital assistants to manage routine processes.
  3. Outsource: Delegate tasks that don’t require your unique expertise. Free yourself to focus on what you’re uniquely good at, rather than being bogged down by everything else.

Make Time, Don’t Find It

The simple shift from passively “finding” time to actively making time can transform how you approach your work, your goals, and even your personal life. So, take a look at your calendar today—what are you going to make time for?

Stay efficient, stay focused, and remember: the best way to “do more” is often to do less of what doesn’t matter.

Make an effective day,
