Help Us Optimize EMS Training: Share Your Insights!

As we celebrate Canada Day and look forward to the 4th of July, I want to address a pertinent issue that affects the effectiveness of our training at PFARS. Training new members is crucial, yet we face a logistical challenge that needs our collective input to solve.
New members at PFARS begin as probationary members and are required to complete 10 training modules covering operations, patient care, and EMT skills within a year to become active members. Each module involves a training session, a practice session, and a testing session, separated by at least 24 hours. The complexity arises because you cannot train in the last three days of the month to avoid end-of-month cramming.
Historically, shifts are 12 hours long, and training is supposed to occur during these shifts. However, emergency calls and other duties often delay or cancel scheduled training sessions. This not only frustrates the trainees but also impacts the overall readiness of our team.
Our trainers are highly skilled, yet each brings different experiences and teaching styles. This variability is valuable but can lead to inconsistencies in training quality and outcomes.
To address these challenges, I recently introduced "mod parties," where we schedule training sessions independently of shifts, ensuring that they are not interrupted by emergency calls. This helps in grouping trainees together for sessions but still faces logistical hurdles.
We are exploring solutions, such as assigning a senior member to conduct a training session once a week on a rotating basis through the modules. However, the challenge remains if someone cannot attend these scheduled sessions.
We are at a pivotal point where we need to refine our approach to training to ensure it is as efficient and effective as possible. Your experiences and suggestions could be invaluable.
Please share your thoughts or similar experiences. How can we streamline our training process to ensure consistency and quality without sacrificing the hands-on experience crucial to our operations?
Make it an effective day,
