Why I’m Up at 5:15 AM (and Why It’s Not What You Think)

Good morning, everybody—and I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend.
It’s been a couple of weeks since I last shared anything, and no, it’s not because I’ve been too busy to post—it’s because I just haven’t had the mental bandwidth. And that’s an important distinction.
Sometimes it’s not about time. It’s about space—the kind that lets you think clearly and choose what’s worth sharing.
That said, I’m back today with something I think is worth talking about.
📱 “Toxic Post”? Or Lifestyle Design?
A couple of weeks ago, I posted a quick video on LinkedIn. Maybe you saw it—it was 5:15 AM, I was on my way to an F3 workout (if you’ve heard me talk about F3, you know I love it), and I mentioned that in the last 15 minutes, I had:
- Talked to a client
- Closed a new client
- Created a blog post
- Scheduled social media content
- Touched base with my mom
All before the sun came up.
All thanks to asynchronous communication.
The video got almost 300,000 impressions, which is a first for me on LinkedIn. And while many responses were kind, some people absolutely hated it. Comments like:
“Bad attitude. Toxic post.”
“You’re glorifying hustle culture.”
“I’ll coach you to grow your business so you don’t have to get up at 5:00 AM.”
Here’s the thing: They didn’t watch the whole video—or they misunderstood the point entirely.
☕️ I’m Not Hustling. I’m Designing.
I don’t get up at 5:00 AM to hustle.
I do it to work out with people I enjoy, because I don’t work in an office.
I do it to get home by 6:30 and make breakfast for my five kids.
I do it so I can sit and enjoy a quiet cup of coffee before the day begins.
That’s not a grind. That’s peace.
Yes, I “work” at 5:00 AM.
Yes, I sometimes “work” at 10:30 PM.
But I’m not working from 5 to 10:30.
The middle of my day is spent doing life—with my wife, with our kids, taking care of our home, cleaning, doing errands, and living fully.
Asynchronous tools allow me to bookend my work around life—not the other way around.
🧠 Morning Routines ≠ Success Blueprints
Let’s be honest: the “perfect morning routine” trend has gotten out of hand.
People post about 2-hour rituals like they’re a silver bullet. And if that works for them, great. But you don’t need a perfect morning routine to be successful.
I work out three times a week.
That’s not a ritual. It’s a choice.
My point is: don’t judge someone’s lifestyle by the sliver of time they choose to post about. And definitely don’t assume that getting up early means someone is addicted to hustle.
🛠 You Can Build a Life That Works for You
This is about lifestyle design.
It’s about deliberate structure—not default settings.
If you want to work during “traditional hours,” fine.
If you want to homeschool your kids, travel, or run a business from a farm, great.
If you want to work nights and sleep in, that’s your call.
But know this:
Asynchronous communication is what gives you the freedom to choose.
It’s not just more efficient—it’s more humane.
It lets you be present where you need to be.
It lets you live the life you actually want to live.
