Effective communication is like introducing fire to people; it's a pretty simple concept that can have ridiculously transformative effects.
This epiphany came to me during a meeting at a rescue squad where communication issues were identified as the biggest challenge they faced. I realized that, pretty much, it’s communication that is the root of all the pervasive problems in most organizations. When I can help make it effective, it changes everything.
In my experience, about 80% of organizational issues can be traced back to communication breakdowns. Whether it's a corporate setting or a rescue squad, a lack of effective communication affects morale, productivity, and overall success.
So I shared my expertise in utilizing tools like Trello, Voxer, and Slack, and the reaction of the squad members was visceral. It was not my delivery. It was the possibility that the platforms and processes presented would actually improve communication, and turn the entire operation around.
Addressing the shortage of EMTs in the industry requires more than just addressing the pay or the challenging nature of the work. A significant part of the problem lies in the morale issue, stemming from poor leadership and a lack of transparency within the organization.
In many cases, problems and grievances are not addressed directly between team members, leading to a toxic culture of reporting each other to superiors.
It’s untenable and pretty immature.
To combat these challenges, I plan to implement asynchronous daily standups on Slack, creating an open forum where team members can engage regularly, share their thoughts, and address concerns directly.
Additionally, I aim to establish a mentorship program to welcome and support new members, ensuring they feel connected and included right from the start.
Another issue that plagues the organization is the lack of standardized processes and handoffs between different shifts. This problem often leads to inefficiencies and confusion. To remedy this, I intend to use Trello to create a structured and transparent system for handling tasks, ensuring smooth transitions between day and night shifts.
The prospect of starting anew with this organization, and embarking on the journey of optimizing communication and organizational efficiency, really gets me going. And really, is there any better feeling?
When we prioritize effective communication, we uplift the spirit of the team, foster a positive work environment, and pave the way for success.
It works every time, in every organization.
Make it an effective day.
