From Election Insights to Leadership Vision: My Path Forward

Nov 08, 2024 4:22 pm

Hello, everyone,

The dust has settled, and as I reflect on these past few weeks, I wanted to share a little of my journey and what’s ahead. My wife and son are on a well-deserved trip to Paris, leaving me with our four kids at home. Life has been a bit non-stop—no school for three days this week! Yet, I feel lucky; the kids have been great, and somehow, it’s been stress-free. But let’s jump into the election experience.

Election Reflections and the “Less Doing” Approach

Running for a school board position brought its share of excitement, surprises, and lessons. We were six candidates vying for three spots. It was close—my partners-in-crime, Chris and Erica, and I had campaigned together. We’d hoped for a trio success, but in the end, Erica narrowly missed out. Still, there's optimism for next year.

Now, people often ask me if there’s a “Less Doing” approach to running an election. I didn’t set out with any perfect formula, but in hindsight, some core principles guided me through this.

  1. Start Early and Simplify: I put out my first batch of lawn signs in July, long before anyone thought it was necessary. Simple designs without photos, placed early, resonated. Just as in productivity, sometimes starting sooner and paring things down to the essentials makes all the difference.
  2. Social Media Savvy Over Traditional Tactics: Instead of diving into traditional methods like canvassing, phone banking, or mass mailers, I leaned heavily on social media. Facebook and Instagram ads, plus a few hundred dollars, reached over 60,000 people locally—remarkable impact with little effort. Social media, when done authentically, amplifies reach and builds connection, a core part of “Less Doing.”
  3. Leverage Networking, Not Exhaustion: I focused on natural connections within my community—local groups, forums, and even just friendly interactions around town. This approach didn’t just conserve energy; it strengthened genuine community ties. True productivity isn’t about burning out to cover all bases; it’s about maximizing impact with the right touchpoints.

The Bigger Vision and What’s Next

This campaign is just the beginning. Stepping onto the school board opens doors to explore public service at a deeper level—maybe even a future run for mayor. For now, I’m looking forward to bringing a more efficient, transparent, and effective approach to the board. I’m also gearing up to get back to work, focus on coaching, and dive into some new programs that I’ll be excited to share soon.

Thank you all for the support and encouragement throughout this journey. This experience has only strengthened my commitment to the community and to the principles of “Less Doing.” Let’s make the most of every moment and keep moving forward together.

Stay tuned for what’s next!
