Avoiding the 5 "D's" of the College Personal Statement

image

Having worked in some capacity for nearly 25 years directly evaluating college personal statements, this I know to be true: too many kids hurl themselves into the pitfall of the 5 D's (writing about Death, Divorce, Drugs, Depression, Disease).

While these topics are often held close to the heart, they might not be the best fit when trying to make a good first impression with your prospective college.

In today's video, I highlight two personal statements written by the exact same student.

In Take #1 he writes about Disease.

In Take #2, he does not.

Who would you admit to your college if you only had two seats available?
