When a college admissions officer reads your statement, they are, in effect, creating a movie in the mind's eye of the reader.
Think about the days of when you read the likes of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings - how all those characters popped off the pages and created a chromatic landscape in your imagination.
There is no difference between the two experiences - you are being cast as the lead roll in a film you are directing.
This is why the hook (opening lines) is essential - you must captivate your audience right of the gate.
And this is what I teach in today's video.
We will look at the work of one of my stellar students and how she drafted her opening lines five different times.
And your task is to play the role of a college admissions representative and rank each one from worst to first. In the comments below the video, tell us what you think.
I've been working with the college personal statement for over 20 years, either directly with college admissions (Brown University), running my tutoring boutique (Write It Ivy Right), or sitting down and drafting with my seniors at my local high school.
So, I've decided to launch a new YouTube channel to capture and share what I've come to learn over the years.
